I'm Steph Wood, an experienced personal trainer born and raised in Hexham. I started teaching group fitness in my teens after deciding that an office job wasn't for me! I then went to university and achieved a first class honours degree in Sport, Physical Activity and Health, followed by a post-graduate diploma in Strength and Conditioning. During this time I also got my level 3 Personal Training qualification and started up SW Fitness.
Initially I worked from my parents' garage and then rented an industrial unit on Haugh Lane in Hexham, converted it into a personal training studio, and ran a successful business through the pandemic and beyond for 6 years. Somewhere everybody was welcome and left feeling fitter, stronger and more confident!
In August 2024, I went from perfectly healthy to hospitalised within just a few days. I lost all use of my legs, bladder and bowel function and a whole host of other symptoms. In August 2024, I went from perfectly healthy to hospitalised within just a few days. I lost all use of my legs, bladder and bowel function and a whole host of other symptoms. I was subsequently diagnosed with a rare auto-immune condition called MOGAD (myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease) which attacked with transverse myelitis causing brain and spinal lesions resulting in the loss of function. Due to this I closed my business at the start of 2025.
Luckily, after intense treatment with steroids, I was able to regain function and recover well over time. I then decided not to waste my knowledge and experience, decided to go back to trying to help people but this time, in their own homes! I know what it's like to feel uncomfortable in a public environment, hence, SW Fitness went mobile! Providing top quality mobile personal training in the Tyne Valley!
When I say that I understand that life can be chaotic, and finding the time for yourself can feel impossible, trust me, I get it! This is another reason that mobile PT is so fantastic. What would take the best part of two hours at a gym can be done in less than an hour at home!

In the past year, my life was turned on it's head! I met my partner 5 weeks before becoming ill. Luckily he stuck around and moved in, bringing with him his three fantastic kids aged 13, 9 and 6 that we have half the time.
At the start of 2025 while shutting down my business, I started up a new online funny gift business with my sister Natalie. The clue is in the name: Laughing Sisters, because the world needs more laughter and happiness!
I am also in the process of setting up a new business with my partner Ash building quirky, bespoke playhouses and summerhouses to add quality and joy to peoples' gardens!
